What is a threat zone?

The Threat Zone is an area within 1/2 mile of active oil and gas wells, compressor and processors

What Makes it a Threat Zone?

People living in a threat zone are exposed to high levels of air pollution particulartly VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), Based on peer reviewed studies this puts you at increased risk for negative health impacts.

Such as:

  • Leukemia & other cancers
  • Reproductive & developmental disorders
  • Blood Disorders such as anemia
  • Weakened immune system
  • Irritation of the nose, eyes, and throat
  • Nervous System Issues
  • Birth Defects

These health impacts are primarily associated with exposure to the VOCs Benzene (a known carcinogen), Toluene, Ethylbenzene, & Xylene

Steps you can take to protect yourself

  • Keep windows and doors closed when you can
  • If available, use a separate air filter to clean the air of harmful pollutants
  • Pay attention to your water, especially if you use spring or well water. If the water burns or causes a rash when showering or bathing, stop using it.
  • Consider purchasing a water quality monitor to notify you of changes in your water & filter drinking water
  • Tell your doctor you live near and oil and gas site
  • Report anything out of the ordinary to the New Mexico Department of Environment
  • Check air quality at www.airnow.gov before going outside for extended periods
